\"\"<\/a>ACCORDING to Vinpro<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, an organisation representing thousands of farmers and hundreds of cellars in South Africa, the industry is at a turning point in 2018, faced with the smallest grape crop since 2005 and increasing financial pressure. The national vineyard is in decline \u2013 mainly due to farmers uprooting vines and replacing them with more profitable crops, but also because of the ongoing drought as well as crop losses in the wake of frost and hail. The industry is anticipating a R700-million shortfall at a time when production costs have doubled over the past 10 years. A wine shortage is forecast and wine prices are expected to rise\u00a0\u2013 a phenomenon also affecting Europe where crops are the smallest in decades following frost damage, heat waves and fires.\u00a0During his annual state of the industry review, Vinpro MD Rico Basson went so far as to advocate higher prices, and value growth. Soooo… With most cellar-door prices set to undergo an annual general adjustment in March, it could be interesting to see whether the increases are higher than usual in any particular sector or if there is a spike across the board. In the meantime, here is where things stand as regards the country's Top\u00a0100<\/strong><\/span><\/a> most highly rated wines on the basis of the 2018 SA Wine Classification<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 the bottle prices saying as much about brand strength and limited availability as they do about the aspirations (or folly?) on the part of certain producers less famous (or brazen?) than others. (The names of towns and areas pertain to the locations of the cellars, which are sometimes different to where the grapes for these wines are grown).<\/em><\/p>\n
