MANY STOPPED paying attention to the Michelangelo<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>Awards when it was pointed out that, like the South African Young Wine Show<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, the entries include tank- and barrel-samples, i.e. wines that are not market-ready when they are judged and which could change significantly by the time they go on sale. It's possible that these competition results and bottle stickers might sometimes point to the good stuff, but they can also be downright misleading for the wine-buying public.<\/p>\n

The following wines, however, have all been highly rated during the past six months (Apr to Sept 23) by those panels<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>of experts whose opinions do count. All are included in the SA Wine Classification<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, a measure of their good track records involving a span of vintages over the past 10 years. And all are priced at under R150 a bottle ex-cellar. Howzat!<\/p>\n
